Display Different Content To Different Users

Written by Bec on March 13, 2016 – 6:43 AM -

WPMUDEV recently sent me a reminder about a free plugin they offer: Custom Sidebars. It is available to download for free from WordPress.org. I wrote about this plugin back in 2014, but wanted to put it out there for those of you that are new to the Adult Blog Builder website. The plugin lets you display different content to different users in your sidebar and footers.

With Custom Sidebars you can create as many unique sidebar configurations for your site as needed – show one set of sidebars to first-time visitors and another to members, set up sidebars for specific pages or categories, or for special landing pages, you name it – and trigger them to display as needed.

With this plugin you can customize every widget area by setting new default sidebars for a group of posts or pages easily, keeping the chance of changing them individually.

For example, you can change…

Sidebars for all the posts that belong to a category.
Sidebars for all the posts that belong to a post-type.
Sidebars for archives (by category, post-type, author, tag).
Sidebars for the main blog page.
Sidebars for search results.

It’s a must-have plugin, especially if you’re running a membership site and want to personalize the browsing experience for new and returning visitors. WPMU-DEV also offers a pro version of the plugin that is included free with a WPMU-DEV membership.

If you move your WordPress website to a new domain name, you will find that internal links to pages and references to images are not updated. * View how many items were updated

Usage:

Using this plugin is very simple. Once it has been activated, navigate to Tools -> Update URLs and follow the instructions. Get support for this plugin by going to the Velvet Blues Update URLs plugin page. Post all questions as comments.

Free Multiple Title Testing Plugin For WP

Written by Bec on September 21, 2014 – 9:17 PM -

Improve Your Click Thru Ratios By Split Testing Your Titles

Most people will decide to read your article based solely on it’s title. But are your titles as strong as they could be to get that all important click?

With the WP-Experiments-Free plugin you can test your titles and determine which is your best post title. Our goal is to get more clicks and generate more revenue, and I know we’re all really interested in making more money!

Use the process of A/B Split Testing to try different variations of your post titles to get a higher click through rate. It’s very simple to add multiple versions of an article title that will be randomly displayed in any post list. Each time the article is listed it is counted as an impression. Each time the article is visited it is counted as a view. This will easily let you see what percentage of impressions get clicked on for each title.

First step is to download the plugin WP-Experiments-Free to your hard drive. Unzip it and send it up via ftp into your wp-content/plugins folder. Now login to your blog and activate the plugin.

When you bring up your add new post page you will see the option to +Add New Title under the first title block. Try to come up with two or three variations of good titles that contain SEO Friendly keywords. Finish up your post and publish it. After you feel your page has gotten enough traffic, just log back in to your admin area and bring up a post in EDIT mode to see the click thru statistics. Once you’re satisfied that you have determined which title works best for your post, just delete the ones that didn’t perform as well.

If you want more in-depth methods of testing you can read a how to article on WPBeginner.com Split Testing Using Google Analytics.

Personally, I find that the Google Analytics method of testing just puts me in a mind coma but with this free title testing plugin I was A/B split testing in mere seconds!

Click here for more information on how and what this free split testing plugin can do. If you need to test more than just your post titles check out the developer’s homepage at WPExperiments.com for a pro version.

Custom Sidebars Plugin Now Available

Written by Bec on May 6, 2014 – 11:47 AM -

wpmudev

Custom Sidebars
has become the latest addition to WPMU DEV’s collection of free plugins available for download in the WordPress Plugin Repository.

Custom Sidebars allows you to create your own widgetized areas and custom sidebars, and select which sidebars to use on posts or pages.

“We acquired the highly rated and popular plugin after hiring its creator Javi Marquez. Javi, a Spanish developer based in Seville, joined the WPMU DEV developer team last year.”

Sometimes it is necessary to show different elements on the sidebars for some posts or pages. The themes nowadays give you some areas to put the widgets, but those areas are common for all the posts that are using the same template. Custom Sidebars allows you to create all the widgetized areas you need, your own custom sidebars, configure them adding widgets, and replace the default sidebars on the posts or pages you want in just a few clicks.

Customize every widget area and also set new default sidebars for a group of posts or pages easily, keeping the ability of changing them individually.:

Sidebars for all the posts that belong to a category.
Sidebars for all the posts that belong to a post-type.
Sidebars for archives (by category, post-type, author, tag).
Sidebars for the main blog page.
Sidebars for search results.

———————————————————

I know I’ll be testing this plugin as I’ve wanted custom sidebars for years and just didn’t take the time to make a new .php for each page/post style. I like things that I click and it magically appears!

Optimize Image Files With WordPress Plugins

Written by Bec on April 20, 2014 – 6:38 PM -

Doxie On ComputerImages provide a huge impact to just about everything on the web. From news photos to pictures of the kids at Easter there is no question that we’ve become enamored with sharing our photos with the world. However, maintaining a huge image file database for your blogs can translate into high hosting fees and slow page loads. And for Adult bloggers the use of eye catching photos that load fast and catch search engine attention will hopefully translate into a hefty pay check.

In this article I’m going to go over seven free plugins that are currently available to optimize your image files, for both presentation and for SEO purposes.

WP Smush.it

Stripping out unnecessary meta data provides a method of reducing a file’s size while retaining the original quality of the image. The method is called a “lossless” image optimization.

1. stripping meta data from JPEGs
2. optimizing JPEG compression
3. converting certain GIFs to indexed PNGs
4. stripping the un-used colours from indexed images

Smush.it offers an API that performs these optimizations (except for stripping JPEG meta data) automatically, and this plugin seamlessly integrates Smush.it with WordPress.

How does it work? Every image you add to a page or post will be automatically run through Smush.it behind the scenes. You don’t have to do anything different. Existing images can be run through Smush.it via the WordPress Media Library.

IMAGE PRO

If you are using a responsive theme design you may want to take a look at Image Pro. Upload, resize, add, or change images instantly. Easily manage your media collection and use it for any post or page.

Just a few features of Image Pro:

1. images are responsive by default. They will resize nicely on lower resolution devices
2. their size can be chosen according to predefined presets or just typed in manually
3. freely scalable: you can get past the responsive restrictions set by your theme

NextGEN Gallery

Most of you have probably already heard of, and use, this plugin for your photo galleries. Without a doubt NextGen Gallery is the best gallery plugin for WordPress. NextGEN Gallery is also the most popular WordPress gallery plugin, and one of the most popular WordPress plugins of all time, with over 9 million downloads.

It provides a powerful engine for uploading and managing galleries of images, with the ability to batch upload, import meta data, add/delete/rearrange/sort images, edit thumbnails, group galleries into albums, and more. It also provides two front-end display styles (slideshows and thumbnail galleries), both of which come with a wide array of options for controlling size, style, timing, transitions, controls, lightbox effects, and more. NextGEN is available as a FREE download, and also has a NextGEN Pro version with even more features than the free version that you can purchase from their official homepage.

SEO Friendly Images

SEO Friendly Images is a WordPress SEO plugin which automatically updates all images with proper ALT and TITLE attributes for SEO purposes. If your images do not have ALT and TITLE already set, SEO Friendly Images will add them according the options you set. Additionally this makes the post W3C/xHTML valid as well.

The ALT attribute is an important part of search engine optimization (SEO) and many bloggers are missing out on the edge it provides for increased search engine traffic. It describes your images to the search engines and when a user searches for a certain image, or topic, the ALT tag is a key determining factor for finding a match.

The TITLE attribute plays a lesser role but is important for visitors as this text will automatically appear when they mouse over the image.

Media File Renamer

Alt and Title tags aren’t the only things that get SEO attention. Just as using keywords in your titles and posts is important, so is the file name you’ve used on the image. By updating the name of the image / media, this plugin will physically rename the filename, and then update all the references to that media in the associated post if there is any (img, src, url…).

Using Media File Renamer (After it is activated you will find it in Tools), you can bulk-rename all your files all at once, or only the flagged files, but it’s recommended to do the renaming through the Media Library directly. The plugin has been tested with many plugins (including WP Retina 2x and WPML) and supports Windows, Linux, BSD and OSX.

Watermark RELOADED

I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve had to re-upload a photo over the past 18 years because I forgot to add a watermark! But that over sight now has a remedy! Watermark RELOADED allows you to watermark your already uploaded images. You can create a watermark with different fonts, colors and apply those watermarks to different image sizes (thumbnail, medium, large, fullsize). You can also position the watermark anywhere on the image within the Watermark RELOADED settings. The watermark settings are simple to use and provide you with an instant preview of how your watermark will look on the image.

Bulk Resize Media

The Bulk Resize Media plugin goes a long way in helping to reduce both page load time as well as reducing disk space. WordPress creates multiple image sizes, but keeps the original image, no matter how big it is. So you still get the massive image on your server and can include it in posts, which can drastically slow down your site.

The plugin also works with WP Multisite installations to allow site admins to control the image uploads. It can be run before exporting to help images make the trip during import.

Features Include:

1. Automatically resizes large image uploads, keeping the maximum size and removing the original huge image.
2. Bulk-resize feature to selectively resize all existing attachments.
3. Allows configuration of max width/height and jpg quality
4. In MultiSite, network admins can manage image sizes for entire network.
5. Optionally converts BMP files to JPG.

Bulk Delete Inactive and Bot Subscribers

Written by Bec on April 3, 2014 – 12:36 PM -

Wordpress I just had to clean out several thousand bot “subscribers” on a client’s blog and after doing the first 5 or so pages of a check and then bulk delete and then confirming routine I decided it was a good time to do a search for an easier way to really bulk delete them.

A quick trip to Google and I was able to find “Bulk Delete“, a plugin on the WordPress site that did what I needed it to do. Reading over the description this Bulk Delete plugin can manage a lot of other tedious maintenance tasks as well.

Bulk Delete is a WordPress plugin which can be used to delete posts in bulk from selected categories, tags, post types or custom taxonomies. This plugin can also delete all drafts, post revisions, scheduled posts or pages and users based on user role.

If you are looking for an easy method of moving posts, instead of deleting them, then use Bulk Move Plugin instead.
