Your Sponsor’s Referral Cookie Expired When?
Written by Bec on January 10, 2008 – 5:30 AM -Have some links out there that just don’t seem to be performing as well as you’d hoped? The click throughs are there, but the sales just aren’t amounting to a hill of beans. Chances are, that sponsor’s cookie expiration time left you with a plate full of cookie crumbs and no money for the milkman.
When deciding which sponsor to use for a particular site or product, you might want to take a look at how long that sponsor’s referral cookie is set for. I’ve heard of DVD and sex toy sites that only have a twenty minute cookie! That certainly doesn’t allow much time for the surfer to make a product decision, pull out his wallet and complete an order within a time frame that ensures YOU make a percentage of the sale, especially if the guy comes back a bit later to actually make the purchase.
So how can you find out the expiration time on referral cookies set by the sponsor? If he’s using CCbill you can download a little program called IE Cookie’s View. With this free utility you can sort cookies by the website url, and the six digit key code will identify which sponsor that cookie is for. The default expiration for a CCbill cookie is normally three days, but a sponsor can easily reset that. Obviously, the longer the cookie duration, the better for you and your links getting sales, and with the IE Cookie’s View utility you’ll be able to make a more informed choice about the sites you promote.
